Elements Of Style: The Best Junya Jenny Can Be

Discussed: The Best Mens Jackets On Earth, Angles as Inspiration, Techno-Couture vs. Wild Animal Chic, Fallen Publications, Patience is a Virtue Not a Waffle

B’s earlier references to Little J’s episode-long “shag cut raccoon eyed tantrum…” was pretty spot on. Everyone appreciates that Jenny is a little-girl genius, and her dresses are impressive. But seriously. She’s made two. And one of them would have probably outlasted the season to end up on the super clearance rack at Urban Outfitters – not Barneys.

If Little J wants to do a line that Cory Kennedy will wear in NYLON, and sell five dresses a year because they’re so expensive (expensive because she can’t buy in bulk, hence no economy of scale) and then when she wants to expand, having no idea how to run a business, no personal relationships with the buyers, no way to afford a trip to Hong Kong to choose a manufacturer, then she’s on the right track. But…

If she wants to learn a lot as a designer, learn about pattern making and the business of fashion, learning tools like how to expand your business far beyond what she can now imagine (remember Waldorf wanted to go public last season – and I think we can all agree Jenny’s nowhere close to an IPO) and set herself up to eventually have a spin off line from Waldorf, as Eleanor will at some point embrace her age and need someone else to do a secondary line of clothing for a new generation, then she is an idiot.

Junya Watanabe began his apprenticeship under Rei Kawakubo at Commes des Garçons as a patternmaker, right out of college. Just three years later he was promoted to chief designer of one of the Commes des lines and then another one. And in 1992 (only 8 years after starting his apprenticeship) he started working under his own name at the company, and premiered the first season of his line ‘Junya Watanabe Commes des Garçons‘ in Paris the next year.

Jenny, all we’re saying is be the best Junya you can be. No one likes having a boss, but no one likes homeless little girls either – and everyone likes the Junya line. So don’t drop the ball kid. Keep your head up!

XOXO

I miss when Little J was a genius at calligraphy. It seemed more fitting for the shabby chic salon airs of the Rufus loft.
